Is this what a feminist looks like?

Potential new blog coming soon. This current gaming/development one will keep going, to be updated properly soon. If you think the new feminism based blog is worth pursuing then please tell me.

Have you got a WKD side?

In response to this advert from around June 2006.

My initial response to this advert was, “No, I do not have a WKD side”.

The main reasons for this:

  • I dislike the drink.
  • I really hate the ethos behind the product,  as created by thehouse ltd.
  • The stereotypes reinforced and encouraged by the adverts are at best tedious and at worse irresponsible.

However, I imagine the above has been said hundreds of times by people of all types, opinions and outlooks.

Therefore, I am going to give a completely subjective answer, one that will hopefully reveal enough about me, my flaws and my potentially feminist views. Hopefully this in turn will give context to future ‘Is this what a feminist looks like?’ posts. The main conceit of this post is reading WKD as wicked, using its tradition religious definition.

Given my technical status a Catholic, out of a list of nine potential elements to a wicked side, I shall start with ‘Laziness’

Laziness
I have been lazy ever since the age of 17.
Trying to work on it and recognise it as a negative element of my personality.
Therefore I am going to leave it at that and ignore.

Unpleasant Actions Towards Others
To Be Continued… If the blog goes ahead.

QA at Frontier Developments

Got a job at Frontier!

Now just need to resist the temptation to play Bayonetta constantly ’til I start a week on Monday.

Instead, need to finish off UDK tutorials and start on learning first C Sharp and then Lua.

The Lua book I bought is aimed at people with some basic programming knowledge that I intend to get here and here

Chavez not overall gaming fan

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/games-are-poison-says-venezuelan-president_1

Hugo Chavez is not a fan of the current state of the games industry.

I initially read the title of this news item and thought, “Chavez, you fucker”. However, once i saw

But, not being one to turn up empty-handed, Chavez has had a solution: don’t promote these games, make educational games instead.

I rescinded my completely condemning tone. I agreed that ‘edutainment’ is a severely neglected area. Some of the projects that I have been mulling over in my head are (or could be) seen as in that direction.

The main one is TOP SECRET but a more recent one I shall talk about here.

I first aired the idea to two friends, Ed and Adam over a bottle of red wine. It was then repeated in a design club meeting at my previous workplace, SCEE Cambridge Studio.

It is a public information style game that would teach people what to do in the case of a fire in the home.

In a perfect world it would be fully 3D and full, commercial, length. But also free, of course.

It would start black with the sound of a fire alarm going off. Then the black would fade in to blurry vision. The player would then have to escape from the house.

The first time you play, unless you already knew how to escape from a burning house (and had read the control instructions), you would die.

To make the game playable, from the second go, a learning curve would be implemented.

To start, your vision would be clear and your hearing unaffected. You would be able to approach fire in a super human way. No family members would need to be rescued in order to succeed.

As the game progressed the difficulty would increase but then dip again as new factors were introduced. For instance, the first augmented help to go would be the ability to go near fire. But as in real life, soon getting anywhere near fire would almost completely disable the user. Then, that ability would return slightly as you contend with the visual effects of fire, smoke and heat. The third stage would be the introduction of the requirement to save family members.

Other factors would include larger houses, smaller houses, older houses, flats and maybe schools and workplaces.

A final element of the game would be “cheats”. This would involve the implementation of fire safety elements to your home: further fire alarms, extinguishers, improved placement of flammable materials around your home etc etc.

I envision the inventory borrowing the recent Alone in the Dark game. In that game the items menu involves the camera tilting down to show what the character is carrying in their coat. To transpose it into this game - you look down to see the t-shirts you have grabbed to give to your family to cover their mouths to help them breathe. You could also see your child’s glasses that you picked up from their desk in their bedroom so they may see better. With “cheats” enabled you could see the bottle of water and tea towels you keep specifically to hold over your mouths to cut down smoke inhalation. And so forth.

The game is at a very early all-in-my-head stage and this is the first time I have written anything about it in a digital medium. However, one day, maybe after getting a team in place, I would love to try and get government funding and then make it.

And maybe Chavez wouldn’t be too condemning of it when it came out :-D

2010, Unemployment - Day 005

Probably best to keep the schedule a Monday to Thursday affair, at least this week anyway.

Right, these angels are not going to kill themselves!

2010, Unemployment - Day 004

Late awakening today threatened to disrupt my schedule. However, when I got to the computer at 9.55am there were very few new stories on my regular games websites. This allowed me to dive straight into UDK tutorials. Still on the UI ones but they are very well put together and informative - enjoying so far.

2010, Unemployment - Day 003

Interview is done.

I enjoyed myself and the people were really friendly.

These two factors give me hope that it went well.

Now to brave that tumultuous post interview period.

Spending the rest of today doing a back to back mix with Alex, gaming and maybe a hopeful pint at the pub.

Then tomorrow and the next day, regardless of my success at the interview, going to stick to the already established unemployment schedule.

Bring it on!

2010, Unemployment - Day 002, Part 02

The new schedule had to be scrapped almost as soon as it was conceived - my interview is  happening at 10.30am tomorrow!

Have been to the dry cleaners so my suit will be as sharp as it possibly can be. On my return I got an email informing me that Frontier is not a formal company and that no suit is required. Balderdash, I shall wear it anyway.

Am now going to read books and the internet until my eyes bleed. I will be prepared.

2010, Unemployment - Day 002, Part 01

¡Breaking news!

Got an interview with Frontier Developments for the role of “Experienced Tester’.

No date set, expecting an email today, but I am very happy about this.

Looking forward to doing some preparation but happy in the knowledge that I would go to the interview now, at 3.38AM, if they would let me.

Yesterday was a great day. Found a cool see-thru purple Gameboy Color, with an Electronics Boutique case, for £5 in a charity shop. Then picked up Pokémon Pinball from Gametron, also £5. Yes and yes!

Also got a new wallet (much needed) and a plate with a painting of the previous pope on it. I ate a kebab off the plate yesterday evening and it was bloody brilliant.

Thought some more about my unemployment workday (hopefully a schedule that will be short lived due to pending interview):

Start day by reading for an hour:

http://spong.com/

http://www.gamasutra.com/

http://www.eurogamer.net/

Then straight on to UDK for three hours until lunch.

ONE HOUR FOR LUNCH

After lunch will be a time for playing games. Important to play games I don’t like/would not normally play. Important to cover as many platforms as possible.

To finish the day, learning C# to a basic level
